SO this is what the inside of the Cotton Club looked like? I wouldn’t know as I got knocked back by the bouncers. Tried to argue with them. Well. that didn’t go well. Another life lesson learned.

Actually, it was Maestro’s when the smirking knuckle-dragger judged I was too unfashionable, drunk or both to enter. And that was after going to all the bother of climbing up vertiginous Scott Street from Sauchiehall Street to attempt ingress.

Anyway, the Cotton Club was one of Glasgow’s fashionable nightclubs in the 1980s – this picture was taken in 1988. Previously, it was Maestro’s, which followed on from the Maryland ballroom.

Now it is part of the CCA arts venue, just down from the Glasgow School of Art.

Actually, this picture is a revealing tableau of club types. Note the lounge lizard with the tie loosened and a ready smile as he chats to the woman on his right. The bar was a good area to start a conversation with the opposite sex as they were usually separated from their pals as they went to buy a drink, and it was quieter than the dance floor.

Chap in the middle though wants a drink. Notice the aggressive stance as he leans over with his empty glass and money in his hand, which is his way of saying he wants served – quickly.

The girls on the right don’t have to get the barmaid’s attention - they know some chaps will offer to buy them drink. Not from me though. Did I mention that I didn’t get in?
