AS THE WORLD prepares to wave goodbye to the Olympics in Rio today, British athletes were already celebrating a record-breaking "away games" result, which with one day to go saw them in third place in the medals table.

Yesterday Liam Heath took Britain's 25th gold for the 200m kayak sprint and Nicola Adams won the women's 51kg final to take the gold medal count to 26. She is the first British boxer to retain an Olympic title – which she also won in London –

for 92 years.

Vicky Holland outsprinted best friend and housemate Non Stanford to win the team's 15th bronze in the triathlon and became the first British woman to win a medal in the event.

With one day of sporting action remaining team GB has already secured 22 silver medals taking its medal total to 63, just two shy of its London 2012 total. Mo Farrah was hoping to add one more to its haul in the men's 5000m early this morning.

Scottish athletes have also enjoyed an extremely successful games with a current total of 12 medals, also their best result at an "away Olympics" and just one short of their London total.

Meanwhile on Friday evening Usain Bolt won his ninth gold in his final Olympic race. The flamboyant Jamaican athlete made history as it completed an unprecedented 'triple-triple' – he has won the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay titles at three consecutive games.

However not all the UK's athletes enjoyed the same success. TomDaley's bid for Olympic gold was dashed after he failed to qualify from the semi-finals of the 10 metres platform event on Saturday afternoon. The 22-year-old looked well placed to improve on his London 2012 bronze after placing first in Friday's preliminary round. But after three poor semi-final rounds he finished last of the 18 competitors.
