Mathieu Amalric (The Diving Bell and Butterfly), is one of several stars of French cinema who tries but fails to bring this ponderous drama to life. Amalric is Francois, who as a teenager learned a momentous fact about his parents' wartime experiences. With the present day shot in mono and the past in colour, this epic looks wonderful but takes forever to take the viewer into its confidences. After so much preparation, the payoff fails to have the impact it should.
