A bus workers' strike in Aberdeen on the three weekends before Christmas looks set to go ahead after an improved pay offer was rejected, it was revealed today.

The offer from First Bus in the city, made during talks on Monday, was rejected by the Unite T&G union after a meeting of its members.

The decision means the first strike, due to begin at 3am this Saturday for 24 hours, is still scheduled to go ahead.

Two further 48-hour strikes are to begin on the following two Fridays.

A pay rise offer of 3.7% from First Bus to its drivers, cleaning staff and engineering staff was previously rejected before Monday's meeting.

George Mair, managing director of First in Aberdeen, said the impact of the strikes was likely to be "significant".

He added: "This is a very disappointing outcome. However, we will work to maintain a productive dialogue with the union in an effort to reach a resolution as quickly as possible."
