The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet: David Mitchell (Sceptre)

Few authors can convincingly bridge the readership gap between the Richard & Judy Book of the Year and the Man Booker Prize.

David Mitchell did so with his 2004 novel Cloud Atlas, beating the likes of The Time Traveler’s Wife and The Shadow Of The Wind to win the former, but ultimately being outflanked by Alan Hollinghurst’s The Line Of Beauty for the latter.
