It’s a tough genre, to be sure. And with The Eagle, even the hitherto watertight record of Scotland’s Kevin Macdonald – which includes the documentary Touching The Void and the fictional The Last King Of Scotland – takes a knock.
While Ridley Scott’s Gladiator lowered the drawbridge for a new generation of swords-and-sandals adventures (for films set in Britain, “mud and mayhem” might be more apt), nothing has come close to reaching that film’s epic grandeur or all-round entertainment.
