A New York Winter's Tale (12A)

A New York Winter's Tale (12A)

A star cast fails to compensate for this very silly fairy story, in which angels and demons battle it out in New York. Colin Farrell is a thief in the early 1900s, who falls in love with a wealthy young woman (Jessica Brown Findlay) who is dying of consumption. While he is convinced he can save her, the city's preeminent demon (Russell Crowe) is determined to kill them both. William Hurt adds a touching turn as the woman's press baron father, Jennifer Connolly a teary one when the story flashes forward to the present day. Appalling dialogue doesn't help an unlikely premise.

Stalingrad (3D) (15)

Russia's first IMAX 3D production steamrollers its way to our shores, having broken box office records in Russia and China. Set during the German siege of Stalingrad in 1942, its David and Goliath approach focuses on a small band of Russian soldiers holed up in an apartment building, from where they attempt to keep the far superior Nazi forces at bay - while protecting the block's one surviving resident.
