The Homesman (15)

The Homesman (15)

Tommy Lee Jones directs and stars in an unusual western, which brings to the fore the hardships faced by women on the American frontier. When three of her fellow townswomen lose their minds (mostly as a result of male cruelty), independent and doughty Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank) elects to transport them to a safe haven, enlisting a local reprobate (Jones) to assist. The film is at turns dark, depressing, eccentrically amusing and dramatic, with a final reel shock that reverberates for long afterwards.
