Hollywood producer joins cycling film

The Scottish Hollywood producer Iain Smith, who worked on 24, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Fifth Element, has joined the team making a documentary on professional cycling featuring Scottish road cyclist David Millar.

Millar became the first British rider to wear the leader's jersey in all three Grand Tours - the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta - and he is being followed by director Finlay Pretsell through his final season.

Producer Sonja Henrici said: "Iain's commitment to Scottish filmmaking is palpable and we're so pleased he's joining us. This will really allow us to expand the reach of the film."

The film is produced by Cycling Films and Scottish Documentary Institute, and the filmmakers have been shooting extensively with David all through 2014.

Jolomo work up for auction

One of Scotland's most popular artists, John Lowrie Morrison OBE - universally known as "Jolomo" - has pledged one of his works to an Argyll charity auction.

The Scottish painter has created the piece especially for the auction, which is being hosted by former students Blair Johnston, Campbell Wright and Duncan McGregor.

Johnston, Wright and Campbell will climb Mount Kilimanjaro in September to raise funds for three Argyll charities: Rainbow Valley, the Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation and the MS Centre at Lochgilphead.

Jolomo's piece, Evening Gloaming - Isle of Gigh, is estimated to be worth in excess of £2,200, and will be one of over 30 lots of paintings, photography and crafts on offer at the event.

The auction will run all this week until Saturday, with members of the public invited to bid for work online via eBay.

The event will culminate with a live auction at the Crinan Hotel, Argyll, on Saturday night.

Fringe date for G&T company

Three students from the University of Edinburgh have launched one of the UK's youngest touring theatre companies, Gin & Tonic Productions Limited.

The company was founded earlier in the year by Henry Conklin, Christopher Sladdin and Elske Wait, all members of the Edinburgh University Theatre Company - based at the university's original Fringe theatre venue, the Bedlam Theatre.

Gin & Tonic Productions Limited's debut production of Shakespeare's Hamlet is now being readied for a full-length production run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe next month after a well-received debut at the Brighton Fringe Festival in late May.

The production will be staged at theSpace on North Bridge (Venue 36) from August 4 to 23.
