CASABLANCA, WITH A LIVE SCORE BY THE BBC SCOTTISH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, CITY HALLS, GLASGOW

ON paper, this sounded like a Rick-Ilsa marriage made in heaven.

In reality, such was the competition between sound and vision, it was sometimes more like Taylor and Burton slugging it out in Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?

Max Steiner's score is just one of the many elements that go into making Michael Curtiz's 1942 romantic drama a classic. Curtiz, like all great directors, knew that the role of music was to enhance the cinematic experience, not, as was occasionally the case on Saturday evening, to overwhelm proceedings.
