White Birds In A Blizzard (15)

Whether director Greg Araki has mellowed since his so-called "Teen Apocalypse Trilogy" of the 1990s is a moot point. Either way he remains a fully paid-up member of America cinema's awkward squad so as usual the critics were divided over this adaptation of poet Laura Kasischke's 1999 novel. Set in the late 1980s and told partly through flashback, it stars Eva Green as a married woman whose disappearance has a profound effect on her 17-year-old daughter, Kat (Shailene Woodley). The music is by former Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie, by the way.

Attila Marcel (12)

A typical piece of whimsy from Belleville Rendezvous director Sylvan Chomet. A Paris man living a cloistered existence with two aristocratic aunts has his life turned on its head after a brush with a mysterious neighbour.

Panic In Year Zero (15)

Directed by and starring Ray Milland, this hard-hitting drama uses a nuclear attack on Los Angeles as the peg for a tale of survival in a post-apocalyptic world. It's a familiar enough scenario today thanks to films like The Road, but the thought of societal breakdown was pretty shocking back in 1962.
