Anton Corbijn: Inside Out

HHH

Dir: Klaartje Quirijns

With: Lou Reed, Metallica

Running time: 85 minutes

AS a photographer, Anton Corbijn has asked his pop royalty subjects to strike some curious poses. Iggy Pop, for example, was persuaded to crawl naked through Central Park, though in Mr Pop's case one doesn't imagine wild horses were involved in dragging him towards the objective. Here, director Klaartje Quirijns turns the camera on Corbijn to deliver a restrained but fascinating portrait of the high flying Dutchman, who now enjoys success as a film director (Control, The American) as well as a photographer. Maybe it's being interviewed in his own language, but Quirijns manages to deliver the most revealing portrait of Corbijn yet seen. Whether he is at work, on the set of The American with George Clooney, or at home with family, Corbijn remains the quintessential loner, even if, as he says in one of many moments of candour, he does not want to be that person.
