Bill Cunningham, New York (12A)

HHH

Dir: Richard Press

Running time: 84 minutes

SINCE the success of The September issue it has been hard to swing a Prada bag without hitting a documentary about fashion and those who take part in its three-ring circus. Richard Press's elegantly assembled film at least has a genuine character at its heart in Bill Cunningham, New York Times photographer and legendary trend spotter. Cunningham comes across as that rare thing in fashion, a genuine original.

The Island President (PG)

HHH

Dir: Jon Shenk

Running time: 101 minutes

AT 1.5 metres above sea level, The Maldives are at direct risk from global warming. Jon Shenk explores the issue through the islands' charismatic president, Mohamed Nasheed. Beginning at the Copenhagen Climate Summit, the documentary traces the islands' troubled past and looks at the new dangers heading islanders' way. While Nasheed is a fascinating figure, the film peters to a close after a strong start.

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (15)

HHHH

Dir: Nuri Bilge Ceylan

With: Yilmaz Erdogan, Muhammet Uzuner

Running time: 157 minutes

IN this Cannes prize winner from Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Climates, Three Monkeys), a posse of police, diggers, a doctor and a prosecutor head out into the night with two criminals in search of a buried body. A great start for a tale, and one that only gets better as each character adds his own take on life, death, mothers-in-law and yoghurt. At 157 minutes it is a long haul, but once the story has you by the collar it doesn't let go.
