Cobain: Montage of Heck (15)

four stars

Dir: Brett Morgen

Runtime: 132 minutes

LIVE fast, die young seemed to be the cliche to hand when Kurt Cobain passed away at the age of 27. The Nirvana frontman had it all, global fame, wife, baby, talent to burn, yet none of it appeared to make him happy. Director Brett Morgan (The Kid Stays in the Picture) has access to Cobain's own writings and drawings, and some significant interviewees (Courtney Love for one) and assembles a portrait of the artist that makes him at once more fascinating and infuriating. An HBO documentary to the standard one would expect.

Jauja (15)

three stars

Dir: Lisandro Alonso

With: Viggo Mortensen, Ghita Norby

Runtime: 108 minutes

A WESTERN, Jim, but not as one might know the breed is as good a description as any for this Patagonia-set drama. The nineteenth century is coming to a close as engineer Dinesen (Viggo Mortensen) and his daughter try to eke out a living. However tough life is for Dinesen, things are going to become a whole lot chewier when the family take a trip across the country in the company of soldiers. A bizarre flu dream of a film that features an entire landscape of strangeness.

Lights, cameras, colour!

The arrival of colour in the movies, courtesy of the Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation, brought about a shift as seismic as the move from silent to Talkies. Suddenly we were all Dorothy leaving black and white Kansas for the colour-soaked world of Oz. To celebrate a centenary since the process was invented, the Glasgow Film Theatre has put together a season of Technicolor classics. This Sunday finds the Powell and Pressburger classic The Red Shoes dancing into view again (April 12, 13.00); next week it is the turn of Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson to swoon in glorious colour in Douglas Sirk's melodrama All That Heaven Allows (April 19, 14.15); and the season finishes in fine style with Jimmy Stewart in the western The Man From Laramie (April 26, 15.00). You'll be tickled Technicolor pink by them all.
