We Are Many (12A)

four stars

Dir: Amir Amirani

Runtime: 110 minutes

ON February 15, 2003, 30 million people across the world marched to cry no to the invasion of Iraq. Though the Blair and Bush-led action went ahead anyway, the premise of this piercing documentary from Amir Amirani is that people power made itself felt that day and things have never been quite the same since. A righteously angry film featuring some first class talking heads, including a withering John le Carre and Hans Blix, former UN weapons inspector chief.

Tonight [THURS] with live Q&A from London at Dundee Contemporary Arts, Cameo Edinburgh, Cineworld Edinburgh, Odeon Edinburgh Fort Kinnaird, Vue Edinburgh Omni, Cineworld Glasgow and Glasgow Film Theatre. General release, May 22

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (15)

four stars

Dir: Ana Lily Amirpour

With: Sheila Vand, Arash Marandi

Runtime: 101 minutes

WELCOME to Bad City, a fictitious Iranian town where the mean streets are teeming with drug dealers, prostitutes and despair. It is also home to The Girl (Sheila Vand) and Arash (Arash Marandi), two young dudes born to run. But given Arash's family responsibilities and The Girl's toothy secret, do they have a future together? The vampire genre receives an injection of fresh blood in Ana Lily Amirpour's drama. Shot in too cool for school black and white, A Girl offers more in the way of style than substance, but what style. Vand is a star on the rise.

Glasgow Film Theatre, May 22-June 4.

Only Angels Have Wings (R/I) (U)

four stars

Dir: Howard Hawks

With: Cary Grant, Jean Arthur

Runtime: 118 minutes

FIRST released in 1939, Howard Hawks's tale of pilots risking their lives on a South American mail run features the well kent faces of Cary Grant and Jean Arthur, but a certain newcomer by the name of Rita Hayworth puts in an appearance too as a young bride. The sexual politics of the piece - men have to do what men have to do while women look on weeping or swooning- have not aged well but there are still dramatic thrills to be had and the aerial scenes are remarkable even today.

Glasgow Film Theatre, May 24-26; Filmhouse, Edinburgh, May 22-28
