GFF: God Save My Shoes - Sunday Herald view

God Save My Shoes

CCA, February 24, 6.15pm

A documentary that sets itself up as an in-depth exploration into the "intimate" relationship between women and their shoes seems to be using one of the most common female stereotypes as an excuse to make a film – and a pretty flimsy one at that. But then – if the stats are to be believed – women really do have a thing for footwear. And while director Julia Benasra is, in part, as guilty as the media she says is responsible for helping fuel this so-called female shoe obsession (via TV shows like Sex And The City), she also takes a light-hearted look into a fascinating industry that has design and craftsmanship at its heart, with commentary from shoe designers such as Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik. The interviews with stars Kelly Rowland and Dita Von Teese are entertaining; and while the film does successfully explore the plethora of reasons why women love shoes, most of them are fairly obvious. If you love shoes, however, you will appreciate the passion of the film's stiletto-obsessed women – and the glimpses into their wardrobes.
