How German cinema became a 21st-century force on the big screen

I have a vivid memory of when I first saw Run Lola Run in 1998.

The film, which follows a young woman's race to find 100,000 deutschmarks before her boyfriend does something stupid, was a whirlwind of non-stop action – including, of course, a lot of running – driven by a heart-shredding techno soundtrack and with the orange-haired Franke Potente playing one of the most memorable heroines I'd ever seen.
