With: Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi
Runtime: 134 minutes
THE BFI London Film Festival began in Paul Greengrass-gripping form last night with this true tale of a US cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates.
Tom Hanks plays the titular captain, an all-American, thoroughly decent type of the kind the Saving Private Ryan star does so well, with newcomer Barkhad Abdi matching him for screen presence as the pirates' leader.
Issues bob to the surface here and there - poverty in the developing world being one - but nothing is allowed to detract from what the director of United 93 and The Bourne Ultimatum does best: deliver a pounding, relentlessly exciting twister of a story with strong characters to match the muscular action.
Hanks, meanwhile, gets to show his considerable acting chops again, reminding us of the talent that won him two Oscars, and could bag him another for this.
