FILMS OF THE WEEK:

Killing Them Softly (15)

Savages (15)

Reviewed by Demetrios Matheou

The Sweeney has recently been demonstrating the bull-in-a-china-shop approach to crime drama – foul-mouthed, over-the-top, how not to do it. Now, with Killing Them Softly, comes the masterclass. Brad Pitt and director Andrew Dominik first came together with the fine western The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. Their new outing is quite different in tone as well as genre – short, sharp and contemporary, where the western was epic and elegiac – but it's just as classy.
