Finding Vivian Maier (12)

Finding Vivian Maier (12)

Vivian Maier was an obscure nanny who took thousands of photographs on the streets of Chicago in the 1950s and 1960s. Years later, collector and archivist John Maloof bought the contents of a lock-up containing them. Maier died two years later, so her recognition as one of the great street photographers of the 20th century came only posthumously. Naturally the film is heavy on the work, but there are also interviews with those who knew - or thought they knew - the woman behind the lens.

The Promised Land (15)/Walesa: Man Of Hope (12)

A double bill of sorts from the great Polish director Andrzej Wajda. First up, his Oscar-nominated 1974 epic about three men pitting themselves against the forces of capitalism as they struggle to build a factory in 19th-century Lodz. Brought to DVD by Second Run in its original uncut cinema form and with restored picture and sound, it's widely considered the best Polish film ever made. Next, from Metrodome, Wajda's 2012 biopic about the shipyard worker-turned-Solidarity founder Lech Walesa.
