A Royal Affair (15)

HHHH

Dir: Nikolaj Arcel

With: Mads Mikkelsen, Mikkel Folsgaard

Running time: 137 minutes

LOVERS of chocolate box period dramas will adore this tale of madness and passion in the 18th century Danish court of King Christian VII. Newcome Mikkel Folsgaard is outstanding as the misunderstood young monarch with Mads Mikkelson suitably dashing as the doctor who takes Christian and his wife under his wing. Lingers too long, but this gracefully done, old fashioned tale is a modern treat.

Mission to Lars (12A)

HHH

Dirs: James Moore, William Spicer

BROTHER and sister Will and Kate, filmmaker and journalist, set out to take their sibling Tom, number one Metallica fan, to meet his hero, Lars Ulrich, in America. But Tom has Fragile X Syndrome, which his sister describes as "a sort of autism with bells on", and needs routine. If the concept seems too neat, the documentary itself turns out to be a heartfelt, enlightening piece that doesn't duck the hard stuff. All profits to Mencap.

Grosvenor, Glasgow, tonight; Cameo, Edinburgh, July 5.

A BLISTERING police procedural set in a child protection unit in Paris, Maiwenn's drama has all the pace and punch of The Wire.
