Dir: Bob Rafelson

With: Jack Nicholson, Ellen Burstyn

Runtime: 103 minutes

BRUCE Dern won the best actor award at Cannes this week for Nebraska, in which he plays an elderly dad who believes he's won the lottery. Here's one Dern made earlier, and it's a good 'un too. In this 1972 drama Jack Nicholson and Dern give an acting masterclass as chalk-and-cheese brothers embarking on a scheme to build a resort on a Hawaiian island. Nicholson is outstanding as David, a depressive radio presenter, with Dern more than matching him as the mercurial Jason. Shot in an out-of-season Atlantic City, the drabness of the setting contrasts with the emotions let loose as plans go astray.
