Sibling rivalry

WHEN John Michael McDonagh and his brother Martin were growing up they were a real worry to their parents.

There was the holing-up in their rooms, the allergy to “proper jobs”, the writing of books and plays, and talk of being rich and famous one day.

To their mum and dad, a labourer and cleaner who had come to London from Ireland for work, it sounded like madness.
