Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (12A)

HH

Dir: Lasse Hallstrom

With: Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt

Running time: 106 minutes

EWAN McGregor and Emily Blunt are the will-they-won't-they acquaintances in this adaptation of the Paul Torday mega-seller. McGregor is the fisheries civil servant asked by Blunt's Arab boss to bring the king of fish to his kingdom.

Cue meaningful glances and attempts at The Thick of It-style comedy as the PM's media attack dog, played by Kristen Scott Thomas, sinks her teeth into a PR opportunity.

Wetter than a fortnight in Saltcoats with comedy as sharp as a cod's elbow.

Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy (18)

H

Dir: Rob Heydon

With: Billy Boyd, Adam Sinclair

Running time: 99 minutes

IF the Scottish government is in the market for a new campaign to put youngsters off drugs they should buy the rights to this well past-its-sell-by-date tripe. Billing itself adroitly as "Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy" to pull the punters in, the story of drug dealer Lloyd (Adam Sinclair) and his attempt to find lurve features every cliché in the book.

It's so bad even the normally reliable Billy Boyd, here trying for One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest derangement and ending up with all the dramatic gravitas of Rod Hull's emu, comes off badly. Just say no, kids.

Elles (18)

HH

Dir: Malgorzata Szumowska

With: Juliette Binoche, Anais Demoustier

Running time: 99 minutes

ARMED with an inexhaustible supply of groovy spectacles and a fabulous Paris apartment, Juliette Binoche plays Anne, an Elle magazine writer investigating student prostitution in the city. In delving into the shadowy lives of others she begins to reflect on her own privileged existence.

Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska's drama is as glossy as a monthly mag. Ultimately, despite the performances, it's just as shallow.
