Holy Rollers (15)

HH

Dir: Kevin Asch With: Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Bartha

HERE’S one Jesse Eisenberg, star of The Social Network, made earlier.

Eisenberg plays Sam Gold, a young, Orthodox Jewish man, a good son and a fine brother. Competing with Sam’s family for his loyalties is Yosef next door (Justin Bartha), a roll with the dice kind of character who promises Sam easy money importing “medicines for rich people” from Amsterdam.

Kevin Asch has a fine story to tell, one peopled by strong characters, yet through ponderous direction and too many dialogue-clogged scenes he makes heavy weather of it, making the film seem much longer than its 88-minute running time. What should be a juicy tale of temptation versus tradition ends up a dry yarn, but Eisenberg and Bartha keep the show rolling along.

You’ve Been Trumped (N/C 12+)

Dir: Anthony Baxter

THE Belmont cinema in Aberdeen has been doing such roaring business with this documentary look at Donald Trump’s golf course and its impact on the community that the run has been extended several times.

Now there’s a chance for those outside Aberdeen to see what the fuss is about, and this is one film well worth seeing. Director Anthony Baxter hears the side of those opposed to Trump’s plans for the Menie Dunes, all the while giving The Donald’s lot a chance to have their say direct to camera (they declined, says a postscript). Foremost among the objectors is Michael Forbes, formerly a lifelong SNP supporter who has a few things to say about the Scottish Government’s backing of the plans.

Despite all the coverage of the story, this is a real eye opener of a film, and a cracking piece of filmmaking from Baxter, who uses his own nous, nerve and a few judicious clips from Local Hero besides, to make a compelling case. See it and decide for yourself who are the real brave hearts in this tale.

Glasgow Film Theatre, July 13, 5.45pm. Followed by Q&A with director.
