Only Lovers Left Alive (15)

Only Lovers Left Alive (15)

Dir: Jim Jarmusch

With: Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston

Runtime: 123 minutes

DRIVE as many stakes into cold, cold hearts as you like, but it seems you can't keep vampire movies down. When the results are as hip as this offering from Jim Jarmusch (Ghost Dog), one would not want to. Here, the creatures of the night are Tilda Swinton and her rock star boyfriend Tom Hiddleston. It's a one-theme, one-joke horror, but the performances are winners and there is style to burn.

Stalingrad 3D (15)

Dir: Fyodor Bondarchuk

With: Mariya Smolnikova, Thomas Kretschmann

Runtime: 131 minutes

HERE is an odd one. Fyodor Bondarchuk choses to tell the story of the infamous battle by filming in 3D, and framing events from the point of view of two local women: one who is "adopted" by Russian troops as a sister/mother substitute, and another who has become a Nazi officer's mistress as a way of staying alive. The resulting picture is a bizarre mix of war porn and soft soap.

A New York Winter's Tale (12A)

Dir: Akiva Goldsman

With: Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay

Runtime: 118mins

DON'T be deceived by the starry cast or the presence of an Oscar-winning screenwriter (here also making his directing debut), A New York Winter's Tale is an uninvolving mess. Adapted from Mark Helprin's beloved fantasy novel, Akiva (A Beautiful Mind) Goldsman's film follows a century-spanning supernatural love story between a charismatic thief (Colin Farrell) and a dying beauty (Jessica Brown Findlay) that hinges on a miracle. Goldsman tosses plenty at the screen - including a flying white horse and a demonic Russell Crowe with dodgy Irish accent - but can only deliver something that's mawkishly sentimental and incredibly silly.
