To mark the release of X-Men: First Class, we reveals the vital career statistics of the X-Women: Female Class.

Real name: January Jones.

Age: 33.

From: Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Comic book name: Emma Frost.

Superpowers: Telepathy and ability to turn her skin into diamonds.

Also known for: Daring costumes. Emma Frost is the Emma Peel of X-Men, a woman as much at home in a leather catsuit as other women are in pyjamas.

Life and career: Best known till now as Betty Draper in Mad Men, Jones has been moving smoothly into movies, appearing recently opposite Liam Neeson in the thriller, Unknown. She is soon to be seen in The Hungry Rabbit Jumps, with Nicolas Cage.

On Emma Frost’s revealing costumes: “They are incredible. Not so comfortable, but they’re incredible looking and really true to the comics.” She fought, and won, the right to wear a cape.

Real name: Zoe Kravitz.

Age: 22.

From: New York City.

Comic book name: Angel Salvadore.

Superpowers: Has a tattoo of wings on her back which turn into real ones, enabling her to fly. Spits acid at foes.

Also known for: Her character is discovered working as a go-go dancer by Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender), both of whom are recruiting mutants for a new CIA programme.

Life and career: Daughter of singer Lenny Kravitz and actor Lisa Bonet. Roles in Californication, The Brave One, with Jodie Foster, and It’s Kind of a Funny Story. Singer-songwriter in her own band, Elevator Fight.

On her X-Men character: “A punk rock superhero.”

Real name: Jennifer Lawrence.

Age: 20.

From: Louisville, Kentucky.

Comic book name: Raven Darkholme/Mystique.

Superpowers: Ability to shape-shift, turning herself into a replica of anyone.

Also known for: Being blue. The make-up could take up to eight hours to put on. “As much as I can complain about it, I have to be appreciative of being made into a piece of art. When it’s done, it really is the most incredible thing you’ve ever seen.”

Life and career: Lawrence became an indie darling after her Oscar-nominated appearance in Winter’s Bone, but is now branching into mainstream. Soon to be seen in The Beaver, directed by Jodie Foster, and science fiction thriller The Hunger Games.

On how her X-Men character will mature: “She’s not going to be bubbly and she’s not going to be stupid. She still has sass and strength.”

Real name: Jane Goldman.

Age: 40.

From: London.

Comic book name: Writer Girl.

Superpowers: Ability to put together a mean script that can please Hollywood and audiences. Some might say emerging from the shadow of her other half, Jonathan Ross, was a show of superpower strength too.

Also known for: Hair that’s the colour of bubblegum.

Life and career: Married at the age of 18, Goldman brought up three children with Ross before her own career took off with Stardust and Kick-Ass, both of which were co-written with director Matthew Vaughn.

On writing scripts that please both comic book fans and mainstream audiences: “The most important thing is to tell a good story but be respectful of the source material and be true to the spirit of it.”

On her influence on casting: “Ultimately, of course, the choice is always the director’s but I stick my oar in whenever I can.”

Real name: Rose Byrne.

Age: 31.

From: Sydney, Australia.

Comic book name: CIA Chick.

Superpowers: None. Byrne plays CIA agent Moira MacTaggert. Friend to good mutants, enemy of bad ones, Moira is a feminist, though mini-skirt wearing, trailblazer within the male-dominated CIA.

Also known for: Being a bit sweet on Charles Xavier, though her professionalism makes her hide those feelings.

Life and career: Byrne is best known for TV’s Damages, in which she plays the wronged lawyer to Glenn Close’s dragon lady senior partner. Like Jennifer Lawrence, this year sees her push into the mainstream, with haunted house chiller Insidious, and the forthcoming Judd Apatow comedy, Bridesmaids.

Of her character in X-Men: She describes Moira as innovative, inspirational, and “ballsy”.

Real name: Lauren Shuler Donner.

Age: 61.

From: Cleveland, Ohio.

Comic name: Super producer.

Superpowers: Her films have earned $3 billion at the box office. In Hollywood terms, that makes her Wonder Woman.

Also known for: Having her own star on Hollywood’s walk of fame, alongside one for her co-producer husband, Richard.

Life and career: Started out as a film editor, became a TV camerawoman, then story editor. First film produced when she was 30. Films include St Elmo’s Fire and Pretty in Pink, Any Given Sunday and You’ve Got Mail. Then came the X-Men trilogy, plus X-Men Origins: Wolverine. A confirmed dog lover, she boosted the cause of rescue dogs in the movie Hotel for Dogs.

On being a woman in a male-dominated branch of business: As she told The Herald in a 2008 interview, “By the time I started producing I had started to develop a thick skin. I made a decision it would be their problem, not mine.”
