RSNO, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall

Possibly because delegates to the conference of the Association of British Orchestras were in attendance, the RSNO’s Roman Spectacular programme seemed to aim for rather too many targets.

It was not overlong as a result, but it was lacking in coherence.

The title referred to the bracketing works, with Hector Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture suffering from a slight lack of rhythmic clarity by conductor Stephane Deneve until late in the piece.
