SCO Chamber Concert, Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh

A Sunday afternoon vein of domesticity ran through yesterday’s SCO Chamber Concert, erupting into something grander in two groups of Brahms songs and the brilliance of Sextus’s aria Parto, parto with clarinet obbligato from Mozart’s last, long-underrated opera La Clemenza di Tito.

Though Karen Cargill was to have sung all these, laryngitis put paid to her appearance and she was replaced by Julia Riley, a young mezzo with Glyndebourne and Scottish Opera connections.
