Glasgow's Star Folk Club - or Live at the Star, to give it its official name - is the latest recipient of the Hands Up for Trad organisation's Business Limelight Award.
The award, launched in October 2012 and presented monthly by HUFT, the energetic advocates for traditional music in Scotland, recognises outstanding contributions made by businesses and organisations in Scotland's arts and cultural sector. The Star was founded in 1978 by singer Arthur Johnstone and currently operates on Tuesday nights in the Admiral Bar in Wellington Street where this month it presents Australian troubadour Martyn Wyndham-Read (May 12), Canadian singer-songwriter Annabelle Chovostek (May 19) and Anglo-Canadian vocal-guitar partnership Jez Hellard & Scott Cook (May 26) as part of its year-round programme of music from Scotland and around the world.

Boston-based singer-fiddler and songwriter Laura Cortese [pictured] returns to Scotland this month for a rare trip on this side of the Atlantic with her own group, the Dance Cards. San Francisco-born Cortese, whose 2013 album, Into the Dark, won favourable reviews and widespread radio airplay, has previously appeared here as a solo performer and as the bassist with bluegrass band Uncle Earl. She and the Dance Cards play Glenbuchat Hall, Aberdeenshire on Tuesday, May 12, followed by Eden Court Theatre, Inverness (May 13), a private concert in Edinburgh (May 14), Border Club, Hawick (May 15), Kilbarchan Performing Arts Centre (May 15), and Harbour Arts Centre (May 17).

Jazz Nairn welcomes back the award-winning Italian pianist Rossano Sportiello to Nairn Community and Arts Centre on Friday, May 8. Sportiello was a popular visitor to the Moray Firth town when Nairn Jazz Festival was hosting many leading musicians under the promotional eye of the late impresario Ken Ramage and the organisation whose long-term ambition is to reinstate the festival is presenting the pianist, with bassist Dave Green and drummer Steve Brown, as part of a programme that includes a September concert by vocal-piano duo Tina May & Nikki Iles and a November visit from Dixieland specialists Nova Scotia Jazz Band. jazznairn.org
Three chart-topping acts from the 1980s set out on a package tour this autumn, with 30 date that start off in Scotland. Go West, Nik Kershaw and T'Pau will be playing Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on October 16, Dundee's Caird Hall on October 17, Aberdeen Music Hall on October 18 and Edinburgh's Usher Hall on October 19. The hits We Close Our Eyes, I Won't Let The Sun Go Down On Me, and China In Your Hand are all promised.
