Entries are now being accepted for the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2016.
Musicians aged between sixteen and twenty-seven are eligible to enter the sixteenth year of a competition that can be a stepping stone to a career in music and the final of which gives entrants the chance to appear in a high profile event, broadcast live on radio and staged as part of Celtic Connections in Glasgow. The closing date is Friday, July 3 and application forms are available from the Hands Up For Trad website.

Thistle Gallery in Park Road in Glasgow's West End opens a new exhibition tomorrow of the art of Sylvia von Hartmann RSW, pictured. A comtemporary of John Bellany and Elizabeth Blackadder at Edinburgh College of Art in the early 1960s, she is still resident in the capital but was born and brought up in Hamburg and later taught at Coventry College of Art.
Never been a prolific artist, her technique is a complex process involving gouache, pigmented wax, razor blades and old gramophone needles. Her work is rarely seen but Thistle owner Carol Dunbar has assembled 40 pieces for this show, which runs to Saturday May 23.

Glasgow-based Shona Brown releases the seventh recording in her 10in10 series, Finally Woken, on May 10. Finally Woken features Brown's harmony vocals and shruti box and tells of the renewed hope and confidence following Scotland's reawakening over the last year and continues her plan to release a new recording on the 10th of every month over ten months.

To mark the publication of Stuart David's memoir of his brief time with Glasgow group Belle & Sebastian, In The All Night Cafe, the band's early recording label, Jeepster, has unearthed an unreleased recording of one of his songs, Paper Boat, and its accompanying video. The track was written and recorded around the time of the EP releases that followed the If You're Feeling Sinister album and it's digital availability via the record company website is accompanied by live footage of Belle and Sebastian playing the song at the 1999 Bowlie Weekender. The song's video by Looper's Karn David features includes images of Stuart Murdoch and Isobel Campbell in Banchory the previous year.
