Colin MacIntyre, the musician behind Mull Historical Society, who was interviewed in yesterday's Herald about his debut novel, will appear at this year's Edinburgh International Book Festival.

MacIntyre will talk about The Letters Of Mr Punch, which centres on the character of a former police sergeant on the island of Mull, in the festival's Baillie Gifford Corner Theatre on Sunday August 16 at 8.45pm.

Other names from the wider arts world attending the festival, which runs from August 15-31, include Alan Cumming, Mark Rylance, Edwyn Collins, Limmy, Kate Tempest, Tracey Thorn, Julian Clary, Paul Merton, Viv Albertine, Eileen Atkins, Celia Imrie and Ronnie Browne.

Martyn Bennett, whose groundbreaking Grit album was orchestrated for this year's Celtic Connections opening concert, will be celebrated again at an event during Falkland Traditional Music Festival, which is being held over the weekend of June 26-28. The late musician and composer's mother, the distinguished folklorist, author and singer Margaret Bennett, will present Musical Memories of Martyn Bennett in the Old Town Hall on Saturday June 27 from 10:30am to noon.

Festival guests include ceilidh king Fergie MacDonald and his Ceilidh Band, Highland fiddler Aonghas Grant and traditional singers Joe Aitken, Maggie MacRae and Scott Gardiner. As well as concerts, there are workshops, competitions, storytelling sessions and informal singing and instrumental sessions.

A new weekly jazz session begins in Dundee tonight. The Jam Jar cocktail bar, in the city's Dock Street, will host a series of duos and trios led by local guitarist and jazz scene stalwart Kevin Murray every Thursday over the next six weeks. Included in the programme is Lady Sings The Blues, a tribute to Billie Holiday in the iconic jazz singer's centenary year, featuring Murray and vocalist Mary Mac, on July 9. The sessions run from 8.30-10.30pm.

The students at the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music in Plockton showcase their talents on accordion, clarsach, fiddle, pipes, piano, guitar, whistle, flute, and Scots and Gaelic song on tour next week.

Playing in various groups as well as uniting in a 22-strong orchestra for the concerts' finale, the students appear at Dunoon Grammar School on Monday June 15, The National Piping Centre, Glasgow on Tuesday June 16, Birnam Arts & Conference Centre on Wednesday June 17, and Wild Space Visitor Centre, Pitlochry on Thursday June 18 before returning for a home concert at Plockton High School on Saturday June 20. www.musicplockton.org
