l One of Irish music's greatest exponents, celebrated tin whistle virtuoso Sean Ryan, is among the musicians paying tribute to Jimmy McHugh in the 14th annual memorial concert for the fiddler regarded as a beacon for Irish music in Glasgow.

Joining Ryan at Woodside Halls, Glenfarg Street, Glasgow, on Saturday, January 12, will be County Offaly fiddler Attracta Brady, accordionist Tom O'Connell, pianist Pat Bass and banjoist Theresa O'Grady.


l Internationally acclaimed Scottish saxophonist, piper and whistle player Fraser Fifield is among the attractions to appear in May at the 2013 instalment of Jazz Sous les Pommiers (Jazz under the apple trees), the Normandy festival regarded as one of the great events on the jazz calendar.

Fifield will premiere a new composition, Of Gauls and Gaels, with an international group including Scottish drummer John Blease, vibes master Gary Burton's new group, English saxophonist John Surman, and New York pianist Vijay Iyer's trio.


l The Nova Scotia Jazz Band will play at Edinburgh's Jazz'n'Jive Club on January 25 and Fife Jazz Festival on February 2. Meanwhile, the band's saxophonist, John Burgess, has teamed up with clarinettist Forrie Cairns in a new band playing Dixieland jazz inspired by Muggsy Spanier. Joining them in the John Burgess Select Six are fellow Scots, trumpeter Lennie Herd, pianist Brian Kellock and bassist Ronnie Rae, and English drummer Graham Smith. The Select Six make their debut at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath, on January 26. http://novascotiajazzband.webs.com
