l NVA's participatory, psycho-geographical illuminated performance work, Speed of Light, is at Salford Quays in Greater Manchester from March 21 to 23. Having debuted the work in Edinburgh as part of last year's International Festival, the company took it to Yokohama, Japan, at the end of October last year, where it was also seen in a waterfront setting. Unlike in Edinburgh, it is free and non-ticketed to watch at the Quays.

l Classical chart-topper Andre Rieu, the violinist and orchestra-leader who has wrangled the Strauss repertoire from the Musikverein to the sports arena, will be visiting Glasgow's new Hydro venue on the Broomielaw at the end of the year. The December 21 date is one of just seven in Britain and Ireland on his And The Waltz Goes On tour, and tickets are already on sale. The maestro promises songs from the shows, music from the movies, spiritual and folk songs amongst the diet of three beats to the bar.

l Kirsty Whiten, a winner of The Herald/Miller Homes artist's residency in Paris when she was a young graduate, has a new show at her sister Amy's Recoat Gallery in Glasgow opening on March 8. Her West End Bestiary is not a collection of photographs of Byres Road on a Saturday night but rather drawings, paintings and murals based on the half-human beast of legend.
