Mullen and Kellock to fly flag in Demark
Two of Scotland's finest-ever jazz musicians, Glasgow-born guitarist Jim Mullen and Edinburgh's Brian Kellock, will be flying the flag for Scottish jazz in Denmark in March when they fly over to Scandinavia for a series of club dates with Danish bassist Hugo Rasmussen. Mullen, who was inducted into the Scottish Jazz Hall of Fame at the Scottish Jazz Awards in October, has connections in Denmark going back to his time with organist Brian Auger's Oblivion Express in the 1970s and Kellock has formed fruitful musical partnerships in recent years with Danish singer Cathrine Legardh and the Scandinavia trio he fronted at last year's Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival.
Garioch Jazz's 30-year party
Scotland's oldest jazz club is celebrating its 30th anniversary on January 24. Garioch Jazz Club has provided unbroken service in bringing in Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, as well as hosting Inverurie Jazz Festival each summer. It will mark the occasion with Aberdeen Jazz Orchestra and the Rat Pack-styled Oceans 3 at Hopeville Social Club from 8pm.
Artisan Trio to be a quartet
The Artisan Trio will be joined by clarinettist Jean Johnson for a performance of Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time at St Andrew's and St George's Church on George Street on Monday, January 20, at 6pm. The trio, cellist Clea Friend, violinist Aisling O'Dea, and - on this occasion - pianist Alex Taylor, have a tradition of playing the work, composed by Messiaen in Gorlitz, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
Wojtek's return to Objektiv
Theatre Objektiv's Fringe 2012 hit Wojtek the Bear, written by Raymond Raszkowski Ross, the tale of the ursine soldier who fought at Monte Cassino and died in Edinburgh Zoo, has since been acclaimed in Warsaw, earning Ross a Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit from the Polish President. It returns there in April - and will also embark on tour of Scotland, visiting Stranraer, Peebles, Coldingham, Musselburgh, Greenock, Birmam and Findhorn, - coinciding with the 70th anniversary of the battle near Rome.
