Jazz Festival headliners are unveiled

Jazz Festival headliners are unveiled

The 2014 Aberdeen Jazz Festival runs from March 12 to 16, with 16 concerts from six countries performing in The Blue Lamp, Carmelite, St Mary's Cathedral, the Music Hall and Queen's Cross Church. Among the highlights are an Aberdeen show for the Jan Garbarek with Hilliard Ensemble, making the music they recorded together on the ECM label live for the last time.

Also on the bill are MOBO jazz nominee Zara McFarlane; Fat Suit, Scotland's answer to Brooklyn's Snarky Puppy; and former Cream bassist Jack Bruce with his Big Blues Band. Bruce will be playing his old hits and blues classics, but also premiering music from his new album, Silver Rails.

Capital run for O'Connor play

As we have previously reported, Edinburgh has become a hot-bed of rising independent theatre activity. The latest example is My Name Is Saoirse, a one-woman play written and performed by former Traverse 50 playwright, Eva O'Connor.

A hard-hitting rites-of-passage tale is set in 1980s rural Ireland, it is produced by the award-winning actress's own Sunday's Child company in association with Black Dingo Production and has a three-night run from tonight to Saturday at the bijou recently opened Discover 21 space based inside former London Road office block, St Margaret's House. Tickets are just £5.
