Acting singer lined up for
Sounds in the Suburbs, the music promoters who regularly bring performers to Glasgow's Jordanhill, move into town for their next concert featuring Colin Verncombe at the CCA in Sauchiehall Street this Friday. Verncombe had chart success in the 1980s with Wonderful Life under the name Black and has gone on enjoy acclaim as an actor, painter and poet.
His first book of poetry, I Am Not The Same Person, illustrated with his own paintings, was published in December 2012. He is working on a second book of poetry and will be releasing a new album, recorded with Blue Nile producer Calum Malcolm, later this year.
Country songs this weekend
Sturgill Simpson, the Kentucky-born singer, songwriter and guitarist whose unvarnished approach to country music and bluegrass has won him admirers on visits to Glasgow this year, makes a return to Scotland this weekend with a gig at Victoria Park House Hotel in Edinburgh on Friday.
He has found acceptance for his songs, which pull no punches on country music's over-commercialisation, easier to gain in the UK than in Nashville.
