SINGER-songwriter John Hinshelwood has announced Scottish dates to promote his latest album, Lowering the Tone.

Hinshelwood, who has played and recorded with former Byrd Gene Parsons and Rab Noakes and has shared stages with Roger McGuinn, Tim O'Brien, Darrell Scott and Martin Simpson, has written or co-written nine of the new album's 11 tracks, which address subjects including love and heartbreak, lust and longing, mobile phone pests, and the life of American poet Walt Whitman.

He plays Tchai Ovna, Glasgow on Tuesday, May 27, The Blue Lamp, Aberdeen (May 28), McRobert Hall, Tarland (May 30), and Aikman's, St Andrews (May 31).

The Bills roots quintet return

CANADIAN acoustic roots band The Bills return to Scotland in early June after a long absence.

The quintet, whose music incorporates folk songs, shanties, bluegrass and elements of swing jazz, classical and Balkan traditions, recently released Yes Please, their first album since 2004's Let 'em Run which was acclaimed in the Sunday Herald as an emphatic return to form.

They play Brookfield Village Hall in Renfrewshire on Sunday, June 1; Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline (June 3) and Eastgate Theatre, Peebles (June 4).
