A chance to be happy with Rock Choir

ROCK Choir, the contemporary singing group that has gathered more than 16,000 members in 300 communities across the UK, is hosting a workshop in Glasgow for budding singing stars. A professional teacher will be on hand at Adelaides in Bath Street on August 9 to teach Pharrell Williams's hit Happy to anyone interested in learning to sing. No previous singing experience or music-reading ability is necessary and there are no auditions. Children under 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Dilemma for jazz fans solved

GOOD news for jazz fans torn between attending Glasgow Jazz Festival and seeing the exceptional French double bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons, who brings his Revoir Paris musical memoir to Crail Community Hall as part of the East Neuk Festival in Fife the same weekend.

Garcia-Fons will be in Glasgow on October 8, when he appears with his band at the Old Fruitmarket playing his score for Lotte Reiniger's classic silent film The Adventures of Prince Achmed. The bassist, whose ability has seen him dubbed "the Paganini of the double bass", has developed a style of music that encompasses jazz, flamenco and rhythms from all around the Mediterranean.
