Piano student set to receive scholarship
Utsav Lal, a piano student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, is one of seven students from the UK's leading music courses who will receive a scholarship at the House of Commons tomorrow.
The scholarships are presented annually by the partnership formed by Yamaha, Jazzwise magazine, the All-Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group, PPL and London venue 606 Club and the recipients, who are all about to leave college, each receive a £1,000 voucher to put towards instruments and equipment at Yamaha Music London as they embark on their professional music careers.
The scholarships are presented by Yamaha Managing Director Mark Rolfe and jazz keyboardist and educator Darius Brubeck, and each recipient will perform at the event in front of Members of Parliament from both Houses and invitees from the jazz community, press and venue operators. The winners will also have the opportunity to record an original track on The Yamaha New Jazz Sessions 2014 promotional download to be released in December in association with Jazzwise.

Jazz event spot for drummer
Drummer Stuart Brown is this week's guest of the Playtime jazz sessions that have been successfully occupying the Outhouse's intimate loft in Broughton Street Lane in Edinburgh on Thursday evenings for the past few months. Brown, who has gathered an enthusiastic following for his Raymond Scott Project, which celebrates the music the composer wrote for Bugs Bunny and other animated films, will join Playtime regulars, saxophonist Martin Kershaw, guitarist Graeme Stephen and bassist Mario Caribe. The music starts at 8pm.

US band plan Scottish gigs
Herald Angel-winning adventurous American roots band The Hot Seats, from Richmond, Virginia, return to Scotland for a string of dates beginning at the Border Club, Hawick, on Friday and including Coldingham Village Hall on Saturday and Biggar Corn Exchange on Sunday. Concerts in Kilbarchan, Findhorn, Glenbuchat, Portsoy, Irvine, Edinburgh, Peebles, Dunfermline and Stranraer follow as the band promote their latest album, Granddad's Favorite.

Festival rolls into town
Inverurie Jazz Festival goes ahead in the Aberdeenshire town over the weekend of July 25-27. Artists appearing include the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, singer-pianist Liane Carrol, Quattro MacJazz, Atholl Smith, Marisha Addison, Moray Jazz, and Aberdeen Jazz Orchestra with Oceans3. Director of Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra, Richard Michael is also holding a masterclass.
