NYOS to perform before Earl at gala concert
THE Earl of Wessex, who is patron of the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland, has confirmed that he will be attending the NYOS 35th Anniversary Gala Concert at Edinburgh's Usher Hall on Saturday August 2.
The gala is the culmination of the NYOS celebrations of a birthday that is but a distant and strange notion for the musician participants and which has already included concerts by the junior and senior orchestras in Perth Concert Hall and Greyfriars Kirk, both given rave Herald reviews by Michael Tumelty, and a tour by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland playing the music of Michael Brecker which ended at Stirling's Tolbooth on Saturday.
Michael Francis conducts the Usher Hall Gala, when the programme includes the huge Alpine Symphony of Richard Strauss and a reprise of the Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by Sally Beamish, commissioned by NYOS in 2003 and again featuring star trumpeter Hakan Hardenberger as soloist.

Folk club latest programme
INFLUENTIAL singer, songwriter and guitarist Archie Fisher, pictured, (tonight), young Gaelic traditional band Barluath (July 28), Nashville-based country duo Cathryn Craig & Brian Willoughby (August 11), and popular Lancashire folk entertainers The Houghton Weavers (August 18) are among the attractions in Stirling Folk Club's latest programme.
The Houghton Weavers celebrate their fortieth anniversary next year and are looking forward to the occasion all the more since singer and multi-instrumentalist Steve Millington has recovered from a near fatal brain haemorrhage that saw him placed on a life support machine for four days and after collapsing at a friend's house.

Cash windfall
for fellowship
THE George Mackay Brown Fellowship on the Isles of Orkney is one of the latest tranche of recipients of support from the Clore Duffield Foundation through the 6th round of Clore Poetry and Literature Awards.
The Orkney fellowship is the only Scottish award of 13 - totalling over £109,000 - but it is one of the richest at £9,900. The fruits of their work will be displayed in the new Stromness Library which will open this autumn.

Tickets for T on sale already
WITH the rubbish skips barely filled from the final T in the Park at Balada, tickets are already on sale to early birds for the 2015 event at its new home at Strathallan Castle. The 2015 T will be between July 10 and 12 and camping tickets for the full weekend, will be priced at £205. Paying by instalments is also possible with a £50 deposit followed by further payments by November 3 and February 2.
