Choir follows Proms success with Praise

Fresh from their success at the BBC Proms in London, with their Mozart Requiem in the company of Donald Runnicles and the BBC SSO, the National Youth Choir of Scotland is at St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh for performances on Friday, August 22 and Saturday August 23.

The choir's Songs of Praise and Passion on the Friday at 10.15pm is preceded at 8pm by the National Girls Choir singing Howard Blake's Robert Louis Stevenson settings The Land of Counterpane. The Saturday concert, at 10pm, is a candlelit Faure Requiem.

The National Girls Choir is also appearing at the International Festival with the RSNO under John Axelrod, above, for Bernstein's Kaddish Symphony on Sunday August 24 and the National Boys Choir sings Britten's War Requiem with Sir Andrew Davis and the Philharmonia on Thursday August 14.

Festival set to celebrate poet

A YEAR after the death of poet Seamus Heaney, a new festival in his memory, although planned before his untimely death, will take place next month in and around Laurel Villa, Magherafelt, Northern Ireland, which inspired much of Heaney's work.

The event, from September 11 to 14, will include contributions from artist Colin Davidson who painted the last portrait of the poet, writer Glenn Patterson, actor Brid Brennan and musicians Neil Martin, Rod McVey and Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody. There will also be screenings of BBC films Heaney made, many of which have only previously been seen once.

Patrick's octet take on Spring

Jazz pianist David Patrick has adapted the score of Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, seen by many as the defining piece of 20th century music, for jazz octet and has been performing his version around the country since the 100th anniversary of the premiere of the work last year.

Now he plans to take it into the studio to record it and has a series of lunchtime performances at Edinburgh's Jazz Bar in Chamber Street as part of its Fringe programme.

Hear the piece, scored for three woodwind, two brass and jazz trio, from Wednesday August 20 to Sunday August 24 at 1pm.

October dates for Tomorrow

The latest show from Glasgow-based theatre company Vanishing Point and director Matthew Lenton is to have October performances at Tramway in Glasgow as part of both the 2014 Luminate festival and the Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival.

The show, Tomorrow, explores old age, dementia and caring. It premiered at the Brighton Festival this year and travels to South America at the end of this month.
