Festival points jazz outfits road to success

The 12 Points Festival in Dublin, the pan-European showcase for emerging jazz talent, is now accepting applications for its 2015 edition, which takes place in April.

Twelve bands will be selected to play over four days. Bands who have gone on to achieve success following appearances at the festival include Anglo-Scandinavian trio Phronesis, Finnish experimental group Oddarrang, Curios, the band of pianist Tom Cawley, above, and Radio String Quartet Vienna, whose neo-chamber arrangements of the Mahavishnu Orchestra's jazz fusion repertoire proved a big hit here in Scotland.

Groups and solo performers aged from mid 20s to early 30s and currently resident in Europe are eligible. The deadline is Friday December 12.

Take me back to dear Old Dixie

The Freetime Old Dixie Jass Band returns to Edinburgh Jazz 'n' Jive Club this Friday after a debut at the venue last year that underlined the band's reputation for presenting Dixieland jazz with freshness, passion, exuberance and visually entertaining stagecraft.

The band, from Enkhuizen in the Netherlands, has a history that dates back over 40 years but has maintained and developed the enthusiasm of its founder members through a busy touring schedule that has taken them all across continental Europe.

Edinburgh Jazz 'n' Jive Club meets at Heriots Rugby Club, Inverleith Row, and the music begins at 8pm.
