CD tribute to Hugh Hopper has Scots link

A SNAPSHOT of a band which existed only briefly in Scotland has been released as one of a series of 10 CDs compiled by Toronto-based music historian Michael King.

In 1995, Falkirk-born drummer Mike Travis brought his friend and colleague from 1970s bands Gilgamesh and Stomu Yamashta's East Wind, bass guitarist Hugh Hopper to Scotland from Canterbury to work with saxophonist Steve Kettley and keyboards player Paul Flush.

The quartet, called North and South, played only two gigs but one of them, recorded at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen, has now been released as part of King's tribute to Hopper, who was best known for playing alongside Robert Wyatt in Soft Machine and who died in 2009.

It's released on Gonzo Multimedia which specialises in British prog rock and pop.

Guitarist leads Clarks guest list

THE Sunday lunchtime jazz sessions in Clarks Bar in Dundee continue to thrive, with the resident band playing familiar standards and fusion classics most weeks and special guests appearing once a month.

November's guest, David MacGregor, will play a solo guitar this Sunday and in December, trumpeter Dave Fimister of Dundee's East Coast Jazzmen will lead a session of trad jazz favourites by his Storyville Allstars on December 7.
