Carrie Rodriguez, Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh

SHE'S the music school graduate who might have settled into a job with one of Texas's symphony orchestras had songwriter Chip Taylor – the man responsible for Wild Thing, Angel of the Morning and a folio of other successes – not heard her and hauled her off round the world as his fiddling, mandolin-strumming, singing and songwriting partner.

Four years after Carrie Rodriguez struck out on her own, Taylor is still a significant presence in her music. She encored here with a days-old Taylor-Rodriguez co-write, Sad Joy, the sort of song that clings to the listener long after it’s over, and there were other Taylor references, throughout her two sets. That’s not to say, though, that she can’t stand on her own two feet.
