Celtic Connections review: Louisiana Connection, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall

Louisiana Connection

Glasgow Royal Concert Hall

It was great. No really, it was. I mean ... Aaron Neville. He's a legend. The Neville Brothers were New Orleans gumbo funk personified and Aaron Neville's tremulous, gorgeous voice was the voodoo magic at its heart. So respect is due. And tonight he mines the depths of soul. Sometimes. There's maybe a little too much supper club jazz. Maybe a few too many soul standards that are simply beyond resuscitation. And the venue is just a little too formal when you really itch for sweat trickling down the walls on to the dancefloor. And you do want to shout at the bass player to STOP SINGING SO LOUD AND DROWNING OUT THE MAN WE PAID TO HEAR.But just now and then the Neville voice breaks out of the confines which imprison it and simply soars. It's so thrilling you almost believe the standing ovation at the concert's close is justified. It was great. Really. Just not great enough to break your heart.Cedric Watson's opening set was a blast though.
