Chris Stout & Finlay MacDonald

The Cauld Wind

(CSM)

Chris Stout and Finlay MacDonald have been working together for 15 years and over that time they have developed a mutual understanding that blossoms magnificently on this album of tunes old and new, traditional and exotic, starkly sparse and absolutely flying. The Cauld Wind refers to the air that blows through the bellows-driven Border pipes, on which MacDonald features, as well as low whistle, while Stout's fiddle and viola variously take the melody or find an alternative, always complementary route (with Ross Martin's guitar adding subtle presence occasionally). This is the work of masters, luxuriating in Loch MacLeod's gorgeously unfolding melody, relaying the sheer elation and excitement of Tommy And Ronnie's Double Tonic, and negotiating the tricky meters of (the far from) Dull And Boring and Algiers with consummate skill and huge expression. Every track's a highlight but the closing pibroch, Land Of Bens And Glens And Heroes, is something that will make you want to press "repeat play".
