Lots of bands now perform past albums in their entirety, and there are piles of 'tribute' discs on which various musicians have recorded, track by track, cover versions of a favourite long-player.

So if you've already got two groups on the go simultaneously, why not cut out the middle men and get one set-up to do their version of an album by the other lot? That's what David Gedge has done here, as his Cinerama project delivers a complete start-to-finish re-think of The Wedding Present's 2012 release, Valentina. And he gets away with it too, even if the result sometimes feels like it's caught halfway between Nouvelle Vague's Euro-lounge indie covers and Pulp's working-class crooner epics. The original grunge guitar riff of opener You're Dead give way a strings and a bossa nova beat, vibraphone and brass bring style to You Jane, Back A Bit... Stop is glorious as Dexys soul-pop, and Stop Thief! goes banjo and Badalamenti. Musically it's a clever match, although I reckon the lyrics fit the guitar-band scenerio better.
