Diana Krall, Glad Rag Doll (Verve)

IT would have been a major disappointment if Canadian pianist and singer Diana Krall's new album was less than a triumph.

Thanks to the connections of her husband and father of her twin boys, one Elvis Costello, she has teamed up with producer T Bone Burnett, to explore (mostly) neglected repertoire of the 1920s and 30s in the company of musicians including guitarist Marc Ribot and bassist Dennis Crouch, whose track record is similarly short on duff recordings. Costello takes a small supporting role himself, thinly disguised as Howard Coward, his alter ego in a duo with Burnett some years back.
