Eric Alexander Quartet, Jazz Bar, Edinburgh

WHEN is a jazz quartet not a jazz quartet?

When it offers many more options, as did the group that Illinois-born tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander brought to Edinburgh for a two-night stopover at the weekend.

Featuring the extraordinarily vital piano playing of the septuagenarian Harold Mabern, Alexander's band delivered many great examples of consummate sax-led quartet music, including the classic Blue Note soul jazz sound of Mabern's funky Too Late To Fall Back, Baby and an In The Still Of The Night that featured drummer Joe Farnsworth's tricky but always musical sticks'n'brushes interchange at a tempo far removed from stillness.
